In January 2024, I found myself on a journey to Puerto Rico, a vibrant island teeming with culture, natural beauty, and a rich history that beckons travellers from around the world. This trip was a blend of indulgence and exploration, where I soaked in the luxury of an all-inclusive resort, tasted the local flavours at a traditional lechonera, and ventured into the heart of El Yunque National Forest.
The Luxurious Welcome in Fajardo
The moment I arrived in Fajardo, I was enveloped in a sense of serenity. The drive from San Juan, which took just over an hour, was scenic, with glimpses of the turquoise sea and lush green landscapes that seemed to stretch endlessly. The resort, perched on a hill overlooking the ocean, was a haven of luxury. It wasn’t just the grand architecture or the impeccably designed interiors that impressed me; it was the attention to detail and the warm hospitality that truly made it special.
From the moment I checked in, I was pampered with all-inclusive amenities that made my stay utterly relaxing. The room, spacious and elegantly decorated, opened up to a private balcony with a panoramic view of the ocean. Each morning, I woke up to the sound of waves gently lapping against the shore, a reminder of the island’s timeless rhythm.
The resort offered everything one could ask for—gourmet dining, a spa that felt like a sanctuary, infinity pools that blended seamlessly with the horizon, and a variety of activities that ranged from yoga on the beach to kayaking in the calm waters of the bay. Despite all the luxury at my fingertips, I was eager to explore beyond the confines of the resort.
A Culinary Adventure: Lechonera El Rancho
One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to Lechonera El Rancho, a renowned spot for tasting one of Puerto Rico’s most famous dishes—lechón asado, or roasted pig. The drive inland to Guavate, where the lechonera is located, was an experience in itself. As the road wound through the lush countryside, I passed small villages, green hills, and roadside stands selling everything from fresh fruits to artisanal crafts.
When I arrived at Lechonera El Rancho, the atmosphere was vibrant, with locals and tourists alike gathered around long wooden tables, enjoying hearty plates of food. The scent of roasting pork filled the air, an irresistible aroma that drew me in immediately. Watching the whole pig turning slowly on a spit, its skin crackling and browning to perfection, was a mouth-watering sight.
The meal that followed was nothing short of a feast. The lechón was tender and flavorful, with a perfect balance of juicy meat and crispy skin. It was served with traditional sides like arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), yuca, and tostones (fried plantains), each dish bursting with the bold flavors that characterize Puerto Rican cuisine. The experience was more than just a meal; it was a celebration of the island’s culinary traditions and the joy of communal dining.
Nature’s Majesty: El Yunque National Forest
No trip to Puerto Rico would be complete without a visit to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System.
This is a place of awe-inspiring beauty, with its towering trees, cascading waterfalls, and an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. My hike through the forest took me along well-marked trails that wound through dense vegetation, past crystal-clear streams, and up to breathtaking viewpoints. The highlight of the hike was reaching La Mina Falls, a stunning waterfall that tumbles into a natural pool. Here, I took a refreshing dip in the cool waters, surrounded by the lush greenery of the rainforest.
The forest is also home to a variety of wildlife, and as I walked, I kept an eye out for the elusive Puerto Rican parrot, one of the rarest birds in the world. Though I wasn’t lucky enough to spot one, I was treated to sightings of other creatures, including the coquí, a small tree frog whose distinctive call is synonymous with the sounds of the Puerto Rican night.
The experience of walking through El Yunque was both humbling and exhilarating. It’s a place where the power and beauty of nature are on full display, and where one can truly disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Reflections on Puerto Rico
As I sat on the balcony of my resort on my last evening in Fajardo, watching the sun set over the ocean, I reflected on the richness of my experiences in Puerto Rico. This trip had been a perfect blend of luxury and adventure, where I was able to indulge in the comforts of a world-class resort while also immersing myself in the island’s vibrant culture and natural wonders.
From the mouth-watering meal at Lechonera El Rancho to the awe-inspiring beauty of El Yunque, every moment of this journey had been filled with discovery and delight.
